The importance of setting up your hospitality properties New Year’s organizational strategy can’t be underestimated.

Today I’m going to look at how you could have set up your 2018 organizational strategy.

.

Whether you have had a pretty good year or you have gone through unsettled times, you can’t underestimate the importance of organizational goals.

.

I can hear you now.

.

Setting goals!

.

I’ll put it on my resolution list right after buying that exercise treadmill I need.

.

I am here to tell you that setting goals should become a priority.

.

If you set goals then you have the ability to measure them and treasure your successes.

.

.

So, how do you start?

.

Have you ever heard of the KISS formula (Keep it Short and Simple)?

.

I want you to use the KISA formula (Keep it Simple and Achievable)

.

I’m going to share with you some tips on how to design your goal shortlist for the New Year. As you read through them, keep in mind that some of these can be one-on-one exchanges, and some will be team discussion.

.

In other words – don’t try to do it all yourself.

.

.

Tip #1

No one employee on your property— including you — has all the answers. So, not only should you identify your business goals, but ask employees to you to do the same. This might not only give you more ideas but enlighten you on issues you may not have realized. It is also a way to make your employees feel like they are part of the team and that you value their thoughts.

.

This data can be vital for setting goals that are credible and achievable.

 .

.

Tip #2

Ask your employees the following questionsThey are designed to help you and your employees find the blind spots that can lead your property awry — so you can clean them out and create a clear course forward:

  • What have we tried to achieve in 2017 that we must accomplish in 2018, and how will that be rewarding to us?

.

  • In thinking about our outcomes (results, quality, guest engagement and service, etc.), what targets are we hitting — and which ones are we missing?

.

  • What am I not hearing or dealing with as an owner/manager, that I need to address?

.

  • Is there anything I can do to get out of the way of and/or accelerate our success?

 .

.

Tip #3

What did we learn this year that can help us next year?

Consider these questions:

.

  • What have lessons from 2017 and prior years we yet to fully address? Are there prevalent issues that need to be looked at?

.

  • How has our business environment — market, products, customers, providers, partners, costs, competition or supervisory setting — changed since last year? Is our past strategy working or in leading those changes? And what do we need to adjust in 2018?

.

  • How have our SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) evolved in 2017 — and what should that mean for our goals in the New Year?

.

  • What should our measurable goals be going forward?

 .

.

Tip #4

Do this year’s goals fit into our bigger picture? Once you’ve settled on your goals for 2018, ask yourself: do these goals aligned with our long-term goals, with our people and our hospitality properties business plan?

.

This is a good opportunity to check your direction before plunging into the New Year.

.

.

Tip #5

Decide the best way to package your goals, and then share them with your employees, and ensure everyone is crystal clear on the goals you’ve worked so hard to design?

.

The end of the year is a perfect opportunity to set your course for the next 12 months — and beyond.  Use these tips to hone down and choose the right 3-5 goals that will have you feeling like you hit it out of the park where it really matters.

.
